Our London-based studio works from concept to construction. We are unique in that we provide delivery spanning structural engineering, architecture, construction and interior design. Less hassle, better results.
Our practice covers cultural institutions, ambitious home designs and real-estate projects. We’re versatile. Our pipeline of somethings includes large-scale renovations and installations, specific design tasks, sculptural pieces and finishing touches.
Those who collaborate with us share our principles of sustainable design. We run life-cycle carbon assessments and prioritise material reuse to reduce environmental impact. We work to ensure that what works best for your project works best for the planet too.
We bring the rigour and innovation of commercial projects to architectural interventions at a smaller scale. Our experienced team has worked with The Science Museum, The Royal Academy of Art, Arup, McLaren, The London School of Architecture, Clerkenwell Design Week and independent architecture firms. Joe Crawshaw
Founder
Joe CEng MICE is a chartered structural engineer. In 2023 he established SomethingStudio to bring the rigour and innovation of large-scale commercial projects to smaller-scale architecture and design.
Previously at Arup, world-leading design engineers, Joe delivered diverse and award winning projects in multiple countries across residential, commercial, cultural and infrastructure sectors. Versatility, technical precision and creativity are his core strengths. His approach prioritises sustainable design principles, with a particular focus on material reuse and circular design strategies that minimize environmental impact. Joe has studied traditional building techniques in Malawi and Vietnam, bringing a global approach to solve engineering challenges at a local level.
He has a distinguished academic background in architectural engineering from the University of Leeds, where he received several awards for his innovative design approach and technical expertise.
Annie Johnson
Design
Annie Johnson MEng is an experienced architectural engineer with a passion for sustainable design. With a background in architectural engineering from the University of Leeds, Annie has experience across a wide array of design-led sectors, including residential, commercial and historical. Her approach is rooted in solutions with sound architectural principles and sustainable design.
Annie is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of designers. She leads STEM workshops in partnership with Scale Rule during Clerkenwell Design Week, mentors students through the National Saturday Club, tutors and lectures at the Royal College of Art (RCA) and the London School of Architecture (LSA) as a Part 0 Tutor.
Through both her professional and teaching roles, Annie is dedicated to advancing the integration of sustainability and creativity in design, inspiring a more holistic approach to architecture and engineering.
Mack Wallace
Construction
Mack Wallace qualified RSE Journeyman, site manager, carpenter and joiner. With expertise in delivering small scale bespoke renovations to large scale commercial projects. Mack has lead construction projects through groundworks to superstructure and fit out.
A passion for woodworking and carpentry has driven him to work abroad in three different continents to master the trade.
With 13 years’ experience in the industry he’s become a strong leader and teacher on site honing management and technical skills.
Lucile Richardson
Carpentry
With a decade of on-site experience, and Lucile is a skilled carpenter specializing in high-quality craftsmanship, precision work, and joinery. NZQA certified, she has extensive experience in residential and commercial projects, including framing, cabinetry, trim work, custom builds, renovations, and finish carpentry.
Lucile takes pride in delivering projects that are both structurally sound and visually refined. Her goal is always to exceed client expectations through her reliable service, clear communication, and workmanship built to last.
Fran Bizzaro
Structures
Fran is a Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng, MIStructE, EUR ING). With 10 years of experience designing concrete, steel, and timber structures across a wide range of technically demanding projects.
Holding a First Class degree in Civil Engineering from UCL and a Distinction-level MSc in Concrete Structures from Imperial College London, Francesco has worked with leading firms including Arup and Bollinger+Grohmann, collaborating with world-renowned architects such as Heatherwick Studios and RSHP.
His project portfolio spans adaptive reuse, tension structures, and façade engineering across the UK, Europe, and internationally. Equally comfortable leading concept design and managing multidisciplinary teams, Francesco brings a holistic, sustainability-driven approach to every project — from early sketches through to construction.
Alex Powell Davies
Energy
Alex is Energy Lead at SomethingStudio, where he directs the delivery of the practice's low-carbon energy work. He brings nine years of experience spanning environmental engineering, carbon measurement and corporate climate strategy.
Alex began his career at Arup, world-leading design engineers, joining as a graduate and working as an Environmental Engineer in London. He moved to the Carbon Trust, one of the UK's foremost climate consultancies, where he progressed from Analyst to Associate over three years, advising organisations on emissions measurement and decarbonisation. Most recently he was Senior Manager for Climate & Nature at Quantis in Berlin, leading climate and nature strategy for international clients.
James Mason
Sustainability
James brings experience delivering sustainability strategy, environmental performance and operational carbon reduction. A winner of the prestigious 35 Under 35 sustainability industry award, James is recognised for translating ambitious environmental targets into practical, commercially deliverable outcomes.
At SomethingStudio, James consults on sustainability integration of our work from early design through to operation. Focussing on low-carbon design, whole-life carbon reduction, operational energy performance and ESG reporting, helping deliver efficient, future-focused buildings that respond to evolving environmental and regulatory demands.
Ellie Fleming
Joinery
Ellie is apprentice carpenter at Something Studio. After 4 years working as a Reception teacher and nanny, Ellie finally saw sense and completed her level 1 in Carpentry and Joinery at New City College in Hoxton last year. Now studying part time for a level 2 in Bench Joinery, she has joined us to gain a range of on site experience at our many and varied projects.
Although Ellie’s main interest is in mastering the teeny weeny fiddliness of bench joinery, she is increasingly fascinated by the bigger structural elements that site carpentry entails. Reliably dressed in a pair of stripy socks, she is open to learning of any kind and is excited to be at the start of her construction career!
